Vangelis combines some of the best competition lines that can be found in eastern european Palomino breeding with good TB and Hannoverian blood.
His sire Skalar is by Hurikan who has sired Limet Hurry, one of only 2 Warmblood approved and performance tested Cremellos in the Word, who stands at Wolfrun Farm in the USA. The whole line of Hurikan, Husar Hradecky and Husar has produced countless competition horses, mainly showjumpers, but also notable Dressage horses as well as approved stallions and mares all over the world.

Lothar, a beautiful creamy buckskin is a nice example of the Husar line |
Skalar’s dam Skala was an out and out sporthorse type Thoroughbred mare which helped add a little blood, height, athleticism and a beautiful refined head into the equation. She is also extremely well bred in terms of Sporthorse / Warmblood lines.
Her sire is by the grey Abernant xx .

The Owen Tudor son Abernant xx sired the international USET show jumper Aberali,
who won the puissance at Aachen. In Europe, Abernant is best known as the sire of Abgar xx, who has produced many international jumpers, as well as stallion sons Ommen (sire of Hidden Creek Glory, etc.), Transvaal (sire of Sandstone Dorina), Volckmar (leading sire of FEI dressage horses in the U,S. for 1997), and Pion (ranked 15th in the world for dressage sires by the WBCSH, and sire of stallion performance test winner, Democraat), etc. Abgar xx is equally important as a broodmare sire, especially in combination with the Holsteiner stallion Joost (Consul/Anblick xx). In the 1997/98 issue of the World Breeding Championship for Sport Horses all save two of the 12 showjumpers by Joost were out ofAbgar xx mares. The cross of Ramiro/Abgar xx has produced the stallions Zeoliet (sire of the American show jumper Super Cruise) Armstrong (sire of Figaro, winner of the $35,000 Devon Open Jumper Stake) and Rolando.
Through Tudor Minstrel, this line has produced the popular Hanoverian sire, Laurie's Crusador xx (who is also licensed by the Holsteiner Verband). Celle has this to say about their popular refining stallion: "His offspring prove him to be a class of his own as a refining stallion, a Thoroughbred stallion of a kind every stallion owner is looking for but which is rarely found"

Lauries Crusader. The only TB to be awarded Hannoverian Sire of the Year - who shares his sire-line with Vangelis' sire-dam |
So, you see - this is not just "dodgy funny coloured eastern european things" as it was put to one of my friends so charmingly recently.
(please come back in a day or two as we will be adding more pictures and infor about the pedigree details below then)
Vangelis’s dam side is also interesting. Kogita was by Garut Kubista, a stallion who was himself a very successful showjumper at top level. His sire Garut Humburski (Garut out of a mare by the Hannoverian Alarm) was approved and sired a select few offspring back in the Czech Republic, and was then sold to Germany as a showjumper.

The only photo of Garut Humburski we can find.
He jumped very successfully in Germany and also sired numerous very good competition horses as well as a few broodmares. One of his daughters gave birth to the Palomino stallion Wolkenwind, who was graded as best ZfDP stallion and also took part in the Bundeschampionate.

Because Garut Humburski did not complete his performance requirements in the Czech Republic before being exported his offspring that were born in Germany were not eligible for full studbook status, but as he was fully approved in the Czech Republic at the time when he sired Garut Kubista, Vangelis, upon grading, approval and performance testing (let’s be positive) will be eligible for full approval.
The sire of Garut Humbursky – Garut – was an Achal Tekke stallion of the rare sporthorse type and has produced several top level horses for both Showjumping and Dressage to top National and International level. His daughter Chutna competed at FEI level successfully for years, and his daughter Jaga Martez was one of the top 2 Czech Jumping horses of her time with her rider Petra Spalkova. Just to demonstrate the versatility of Garut as a sire he also produced top level (100milers) Endurance horses and the extremely successful Western / Reining horse Grand Kinsky out of a Kinsky mare, who was czech Champion in Western Reining and Trail.
As a damsire he also produced many notable competition horses, amongst them the gorgeous buckskin showjumping stallion Alois.
Alois is very closely related to Vangelis' dam Kogita. His dam Novela (below left) is by Garut out of a Varin line mare too.

Garut's dam was by the unforgettable Absent.

Absent was crowned "Sporting Horse of the World" in 1968 for his 4 olympic medals, with 2 different riders
He was seven times national dressage champion, first Soviet champion at the 1960 Rome Olympics and medallist at two subsequent Games. Absent's marks in dressage - 82.4% have not been surpassed.
Absent's sire, the gray stallion Arab, took part in the famous 1935 ride from Ashkhabad to Moscow, covering 4300 km in 84 days. For the next 12 years he successfully competed in the All-Union eventing and show jumping championships and at the age of l6 - a respectable age by any standard - became national show jumping champion in the prestigious "USSR Cup" and "Supreme Class". In the Puissance Arab cleared 2m l2 cm
